Here is a thought: This is an ATA drive. Maybe you have not installed the UDMA drivers for your chipset or not enabled UDMA in the BIOS? PIO mode is very slow.... Arno |

Computer loading slow, video play back spluttering, Erratic CPU speeds. Is it my HDD on its way out?
Nope, the SMART report looks fine for a Samsung drive. The problem must be something else. The erratic CPU speeds is most likely the main symptom of the problem. CTL + ALT + DEL should bring up Task Manager, and the Performance tab the CPU utilisation. Is the processor showing a continuous load, if so Processes tab should show what's taking CPU resources. Done a virus, trojan and rootkit check? You may have an infection. If it is continuous CPU loading then one of the process killers can be used as an experiment, to turn off process, en mass, or individually while you watch the CPU loading in the Performance tab. Another thing to look for is whether your internet connection is showing continuous activity when you are doing nothing. There are several process killers on the market, EndItAll is the one I use when I occasionally wan't to stop processes. If you are worried about your HDD it's time to tal#ke a backup. |

On Tue, 21 Apr 2009 09:56:33 -0700 (PDT), put
finger to keyboard and composed: ID Attribute Description Threshold Value Worst Data Status BB vendor-specific 0 1 1 65637 OK: Always passes I suspect that this attribute would have exceeded its threshold, if the drive would have allowed it. Instead it will probably remain at 1 for the remainder of the drive's life. Wikipedia suggests that attribute BB may reflect "Reported Uncorrectable Errors", at least for some vendors. Samsung may define it differently, however. FWIW, the raw value of 65637 is equivalent to 0x00010065. Maybe that's a two-part variable ??? Or maybe this attribute isn't significant at all ??? Try HD Sentinel. It may be able to assess your drive's health with this attribute in mind: http://www.hdsentinel.com/dl.php - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |
