Looks like WD finally got enough drives to fill the channel as the price
has dropped from $305 to $280 over the last couple of weeks. My target
price is $250 at which point I plan to buy at least two, maybe three to
jump our internal backup LAN drives from 4 TB to 8 TB.

Did you create a price alert, here for example
https://camelcamelcamel.com/Red-8TB-...context=search
or are you just checking back now and then to see the current price?

Checking back occasionally.

As you may have noticed, the price of that drive dipped below $250
earlier last week and shows no signs of bottoming out. Mid-week it was
about $247 and today it's about $236. The price graph at camelx3 (link
above) shows a steep and continuing drop.

Yes, a very perplexing drop.

And now, the WED 8 TB USB external drive is back up to $250, just when I
was going to buy another one. The price had been down to $189.

For that one, I wonder why Amazon jacked the price up to $391 for a
short period. That couldn't have been good for sales, except for folks
who aren't paying attention to price.

Currently, as I type this, Amazon says it's only available from third
parties, so maybe the $189 price will come back when Amazon gets it back
in stock.

Hello,

It seems you are assuming that everyone sees the same price
when browsing Amazon, but I was under the impression that
they "tailored" prices to each customer, using a combination
of cookies, IP address, user-agent sniffing, and time of day.

Am I mistaken?

Regards.

You mean they use geo-location so somebody in Manhattan sees a higher price
than east Kentucky?

That's the first that I've heard of that. I'm skeptical until more
evidence is provided.

Here's the Wikipedia article describing the theory:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination

Keywords are "price discrimination", "differential pricing",
"personalized pricing", "first-degree price differentiation".

This hardly new. Next time you walk into or out of an commercial
airplane, take a look at the first-class section. Do you really think
it is worth an extra $300 to sit there? Might be worth paying the extra
dollars to get a non-stop fare unless your consider your time as
worthless while waiting on stopovers at the airports. Business
travellers will pay over $1000 more due to short notice. Their plane
and crew will still be there with or without that business traveller and
their engines do not consume more fuel because someone booked on the
same day of the flight.
