.... pay $688.99 for an HP-relabeled (now-discontinued) Seagate
ST4000NM024 drive?

NewEgg Item# 1Z4-000P-001N6 (Zoom in on the picture to see the Seagate
model#).

Are there people who really think that if they have an HP computer they
have to replace a failed drive by one with the HP logo on it?

Because some customers will not or can not order generic HDDs for
replacements of defective gear. Those customers MUST get an exact
replacement for what was in or what goes into the computer.

You didn't bother to give a URL to Newegg's item. I searched on the
Newegg item number (that you did provide) and found:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1Z4-000P-001N6

Only the 2nd pic can be zoomed and is legible. No mention of "Seagate"
but there is the "ST" model prefix. It is only a guess that some string
somewhere (and not as the Model Number value) means it is a Seagate
manufactured device.

So then I search on the "ST4000nm0024" string figuring *maybe* it is a
Seagate model number. At newegg, found:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...9SIA67S3N30033

At $272, that's priced more than twice than other 4TB SATA3 HDDS. They
even have a similar spec'ed Seagate 4TB SATA3 HDD (same RPM and same
buffer RAM, too) for $169 at:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...9SIA2W021H6289

Go do a search on "HP K4T76AA" to see what others are asking for price.
While outrageous to you, Newegg was similar to pricing by others.

https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/HP...s/3653418.aspx
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._rpm_sata.html
https://www.amazon.com/HP-SATA-7200-.../dp/B00VT1OWQC
http://www.provantage.com/hpe-k4t76aa~7CMPT6T2.htm

If generics or substitutes are not an option, you are hostage to
whatever pricing the sellers demand.

New glasses required.
It says quite clearly at the bottom of the image

HDD Manufactured by Seagate Technology LLC

The model is ST4000NM0024, the part number 1HT178-065
(I got that by entering the serial number into Seagate's Warranty page
- there is no warranty, BTW, it's on HP.)

It is only a guess that some string

That's the one. The HP sticker costs the extra US$ 350.
