Yeah, I kind of miss it too. But the apartment got broken into four
times, and my car got stolen twice. I don't even lock the car doors up
here. When the police found my car, there was a spanish station
programmed in on the radio, and some strange gang symbols drawn all
over the owners manual (I'll show it to you). You are aware, I hope,
that there is a train, that leaves every half hour, and will get me to
the Union Station in an hour. With two hours notice, I can be at
Wrigley Field. Now you LIVE in the city, so you MUST go there all of
the time.

Wait a minute...there is NOTHING Compaq related here. We should focus
on better topics.

Thanks for keeping the rest of us in on this.. Let me know if you have a
spare SCSI cable that I could use to connect between my 6400R and my newly
arrived 20/40Gb Compaq DLT 4000 external tape drive I got yesterday in
the mail from an ebay vendor for $11.67 (cost twice that to ship it
from Florida).. I've yet to open the box, but I'm of the belief that
this thing takes a 68pin connector which can then plug into one of the
(68 pin) SCSI connectors on the back of the box (I think the one not
on the SA3200?)..

I actually have several of these cables sitting unused inside of an
empty cat-litter container. Does the tape drive have the same 68pin
connector as the one on the back of your SCSI card? I have three types
of cables. The first is the one I described above (the most common),
another has the 68pin connector on one end (for the SCSI Card) and a
Centronics connector on the other end, and the third type (the most
rare) has two mini (but still 68pin) connectors on each end. Anyway,
here is the question you must answer: Is the connector on your drive
IDENTICAL to the one on your 3200? If so, I have several of those
cables (Compaq branded) right now in lengths from 15" up to 12'.

also -- if you've got a terminator, that would be cool too..

Same question, what size connector?

Hey, LC, I did a quick inventory and found that I only have two of the
"centronics" type of terminators. If Rick responds by saying that he
needs the 68pin standard (the same type of connector on the back of the
3200), then I have a variety of cables for him...but do YOU have any
spare terminators? I am hoping that he doesn't need the centronics
cable/terminator, as the only ones I have ever seen are passive.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Phil

I have a couple Centronics terminators around here somewhere ... i think one
might even have an LED on it, which i think would make it ACTIVE.

However ... the VHDCI to Centronics cable is viturally non-existent. Regular
68pin to Centronics ... i might have 1 or 2. VHDCI to VHDCI i have several.

I would guess that he needs yer basic 68pin to 68pin cable. The tape device
should auto terminate as well.

Well, that's easy. One for you, and one for me!

Get your friends going on that immediately.

That should be doable. I will get on that.

Phil,

Read closer. I won't know until Friday. My watch says "early Wednesday
morning".

God I love being a "make my own hours" contractor. Life is good.

It was very late, but that doesn't excuse my rudeness here. I
apologize.

If you guys want the inventory listed publically...I guess I can do
that. I need to take the things that the charity needs right off the
top. For remaining items, I will have to recover shipping costs
(preferably in the form of Cubs tickets).

Sorry, again, Phil. I guess lack of sleep makes me a real jerk.

Jeff --

I'll have to get back to you on all of these questions.. I was out
doing my civic duty last night (voting) and trying to put up a shed
in the backyard and totally forgot to checkout the back of my 6400R
and to unpack the tape drive from the box.. I'll do that this evening,
but in the meantime, below is a link to the item I fetched up --
obviously not nearly as good a deal as that terminal concentrator,
but I think better than average for the most part on this sort of
tape drive.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=8816329988

In looking at the above photos for the drive, I believe I've got
the 68 pin connector at least on the tape drive side, and I believe
I've got another 68-pin connector on the rear of the 6400R (see
link below for a good sized image of the rear of a 6400R that looks
identical to mine)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...9734807095&id=

Regardless, I'll be double-checking this evening.

Jez has made fun of my charity work, and my success, therein, being due
to my love of "legacy" hardware. There are a few companies around here
that call me first when they need to get rid of legacy equipment. I
actually provide a valuable service to these people. There are always
things that neither you, nor I, nor any human being can get any use out
of (for example, they might have a half a dozen of those old
wide-carriage dot matrix printers...the ones that nobody has made
ribbons for in over a decade), well I dispose of these things PROPERLY
by making sure that they are recycled by reputable people (not just
stuffed into a landfill). So, in short, I take the good with the bad
and dispose of the bad properly. If you think about it, a company like
that would pay out the nose for a recycler to come and haul this stuff
away...but I do the work for free and get to keep any "goodies" that I
find. Hell, this might be a valuable service that YOU could perform in
your area.

Cool.. That sounds like a pretty good business plan if you ask me.. Here
in the Los Angeles County area, we are able to give the county E-waste
without paying anything, but I suspect your volume would make that seem
a bit suspicious (particularly if you showed up trying to ditch 10 old
DecWriter full-sized console printers -- if you know what those are --
sorry my PDP/Vax days are showing).. Do you have one of those big trucks
to p/u the "stuff" in when you get it or do you rent one? I'm also
guessing that your garage is probably pretty full or you've got some
rented warehouse space somewhere to put your booty you collect.. (8-

I am sure you voted to retain Governor Schwartzeneger.

Do check out the connections. The one on the 3200 card we are
absolutely sure about. The pictures (on your ebay link) are a bit dark,
but I think I can see the "ear clips" which suggests that the tape
drive has centronics connectors. If so, I have a 10' cable AND a
passive terminator out in the garage.

Actually, I may be older than you think. One of my jobs (in the late
80's) was at a Glass Factory. The glass would come from the ovens in a
12' wide ribbon. It passed under a series of sensors that looked for
bubbles (impurities) and spit a dot of blue paint on those that were
found. This detection system was run by a full sized PDP-11! The
machine was the size of a phone booth, and had all of the computing
power of a Commodore 64. The interface was a teletype terminal. Those
were the days.

I rent a truck for these pickups. My work with the charity makes it
VERY easy for me to recover such expenses. The garage is pretty much
full of things that I have not found the strength to part with. But I
will dispose of clearly useless items...for instance, I have stopped
taking 15" monitors (unless they are Compaq branded) and, yes, those
DecWriters (they actually had four the last time) are going straight to
the recycler.
