Default PC won't boot after mother board & cpu upgrade.

Having upgraded my PC today, I decided to transfer the old cpu and mother
board to my daughter's computer, together with a new graphics card and power
supply.

Unfortunately, it now doesn't want to boot. When the power button is
pressed, the CPU fan spins for about a second, then everything dies. I've
double, triple and quadruple-checked the connections, and I've eliminated
the PSU from the equation by trying two others.

Any ideas anyone?

Ive had the screwiest problems with the CMOS and corrosion on
connections. Ive had to clear the CMOS numerous times on all the
systems Ive put together or it wouldnt bootup or would act really
bizarre. I also swore the system seemed dead - no video and wouldnt
bootup. The last time it did it on another system I cleared it and
cleared it and also as usual swapped things and took it apart. Tried
to run it out of the case etc. I was pulling out my hair until on a
whim I decide to try to clean the memory contacts for the heck of it.
After that it started right up and runs perfectly.

Of course in your case it could be anything. Poorly seated mem, etc Or
short between the board and case, poor heat transfer between chip and
heatsink - a zillion things. Out of all the times Ive looked for the
above - the obvious stuff its NEVER been that stuff - only CMOS
weirdness and what I suspect is corrosion problems - poor mem contact
etc.

On another system I swapped out 3 power supplies convinced it had to
be that ! It wasnt - and thats after buying two new Antec PSes !

If you hold the power button in does it stay running ?

Were the other power supplies the same wattage or higher (e.g. 300W, 350W,
etc) ?

Regards,
Chris
