Default Recommended Printers for MAC OS X 9.1

Can anyone recommend some low cost printers which will work with the
MAC OS X 9.1 - we are looking for a colour inkjet - preferably a HP -
don't mind finding a second hand printer, so long as we know which
ones are compatible.

For used pritners the following have downloadable drivers for MAC 9.x:

DeskJet 3400 series
DeskJet 3740 series
DeskJet 5550
DeskJet 5650
DeskJet 5740
DeskJet 6127
DeskJet 6540
DeskJet 6840

Of the list the DeskJet 6540 and 6840 are the better printers: faster,
larger cartridges and support for automatic two-sided printing. The 6127 is
also a sturdy printer but is older.

Maybe the current DeskJet 6940 with
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN
driver. You might ask in the HP forums at
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...categoryId=220
and/or
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...categoryId=415
about what works in current printers.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN
has a list of support for the HP Business Inkjet models, which are higher
end printers.

I realise that the printer ideally needs a USB connection as there
appears to be a lack of drivers for USB-parallel convertors.

Open to suggestions

Epson printers have always been friendly to Mac users. Epson has
finally dropped their support for OS version 9.1 (going with OS X)
with the introduction of all their newest printers within the last
year. However, almost all of the older printers are supported by OS
9.1.

Thanks for all the offers - we have found a HP Deskjet 895 CXi which
appears to be compatible. Not the best HP but at least we can find a
couple in good working condition.

I prefer Epson personally, but then HP can at least work with
compatible inks - Epsons tend to have a habit of clogging the print
heads if you're not careful with inks

Hello Bob,

I'm Gerd and I had a problem to find a right printerdriver HP deskjet
5440 for my Apple Laptop with OS 9.xx
Have you or any other person a idea not to upgrade the Apple OS 9.1 to
OS 10.xx for running my color printer HP deskjet 5440. All from me
known standard printerdrivers from HP for the HP deskjet 5440 needs
the Apple OS 10.xx. I could acept reduced printer function with my HP
deskjet 5440 if any solution with a lower version of printerdriver are
could found. Please be so kind and give me any answer. Thanks so lot
in advance - Gerd
