Yes....I agree... It seems inconsistent to build a RAID 1+5 array,
and then have no other redundancy in other areas at all... Not inconsistent, but insane. It's not just environmental disasters can get you, but logical errors can too (someone deletes critical data), etc. Sometimes hardware can cause logical errors, such as a bad controller or out of control OS/app writing garbage over the filesystem. Even redundant controllers can't protect you from that. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. "Highly available" is often mistaken for "there's no way I could lose data". In these cases, if my recommendation for a backup system is not taken, I usually write a memo (either for the record or for distribution, depending on the sensitivity of the situation) outlining the failure modes that could bring the system down, and recommendations for protecting against them. That way my a$$ is covered when the thing goes belly up. --paul |
