Default Dell laptops - memory in pairs ?

Have a couple of older Dell laptops -
- Dell E6400
- Dell M1210

I've usually added memory to both slots,
with the same amount... do I have to ?

Does the Dual Channel DDR2 enabled feature
access all memory regardless of the
slot symmetry ?

E6400 has 2GB x 2 = 4GB (Win7 64bit)
M1210 has 2GB + 512mb (Win7 32bit)
