Dimension XPS vs. 8300

Is it really worth the extra 3 or 4 hundred dollars to go with the new XPS?
I will be buying a new desktop in about another week or so and I'm trying to
decide.

Depending on how serious a PC gamer you are & if you need to do a lot of
video editing, etc. I don't need the very top of the line computer, so I'd
rather go with 8300 and get a big hard drive (at least 120 GB of HD) and at
least 512 MB of RAM, a fast DVD burner and so on instead. Actually 4600C is
probably good enough for me, plus all those extra good stuff It's entire
up to you, depending on what you want to do with the computer.

When I priced the two back in December, it seemed that the 8300 speced
out about the same. So I bought the XPS. I came with bonus quadruple
memory (2 GB--that really attracted me), upgrade HDD 120 GB, lots of
room inside for a couple more hard drives, $150 rebate, free shipping.

It came to my door (after rebate) for $1800. That included Altec
Lansing 745 speakers, and less than cutting edge CPU (3.0 GHz), and
ATI graphics adapter (Radeon 9800 Pro). No monitor.

It makes Photoshop and 3D Studio fly.

Seemed like a good deal--I'm pleased!

I'm even used to the silly, adolescent brushed face plate and the
gaudy blue case (it's under my desk, pretty much outta sight anyway)

While using is ok, actually /writing/ free software is a disingenuous
activity. You can afford to write software for free only because of
someone else somewhere actually paying for it. Just say no.

has a larger case. The XPS fans are somewhat louder.

When I purchased my XPS last year from the small business site the
price was almost exactly the same as the 8300. I set up an 8300 for
my neighbor a couple of months ago.

In my estimation the larger case and power supply are not worth much
more than $50. I don't know the extra cost for the blue paint, the
hinged upper face and the satin aluminum lower face. $8.75?

So you're saying it doesn't speak to your inner adolescent?! ;-)

I bought the XPS last December over the 8300 for the same reason as
Don. The quadruple memory (2GB) really turned my head!

It's pretty dark under my desk where it lives--the case looks almost
black from here and the silly aluminum face unnoticeable at this
angle.
