r/w is just the re-useable version of r.

When you are finished with a recording, you can erase (initalize) the
disk and re-use it a hundred times (some advertising says 1000 times).

I normally only use dvd-r/w for tv recordings and cd-r/w for computer
backups. Of course, once in a while I will use just cd-r or dvd-r for a
special reason.

A particular recorder may or may not allow recording of r/w discs. Refer
to the specification page in the user manual.

With DVD+-R/RW in DVD-Video mode, DVD+RW is the only format not
requiring finalization. But even DVD+RW needs to be finalized if any
"edit" is done to make it what they call "making edits compatible".

have to stop/start to continue but it always goes away when next recorded.

Some cd-rw's have given up the ghost but that was using an earlier cd
burner on the computer. The current burners seem to be better.

completely, without warning. I have also started having problems with
some dvdram, when trying to use them for tidying , taking stuff off
my dvdr's hard drive then putting it back the recording becomes
corrupt.

Once in a while a bad spot may appear in the middle of a recording that you
have to stop/start to continue but it always goes away when next recorded.

Some cd-rw's have given up the ghost but that was using an earlier cd
burner on the computer. The current burners seem to be better.

I lost a couple, used for recording on home dvdr. They just died,
completely, without warning. I have also started having problems with
some dvdram, when trying to use them for tidying , taking stuff off
my dvdr's hard drive then putting it back the recording becomes
corrupt.
