longest lasting technology
Hi all,
Which socket format will last the "longest" in the AMD64? I have been looking at dual 940's but don't want to get something that I may not be able to upgrade in the future with faster cpu's. Will dual core cpu's in the future be able to go into older/current motherboards? thanks, charles.... |

But nothing stays still for long in this game! JW |

Socket 940 is for the Opterons, are you looking for Opteron workstation
systems rather than Athlon 64 desktops? AMD has said that dual-core chips will fit into existing socket 939 and 940 motherboards with just a BIOS upgrade necessary beforehand. But your mileage may vary. Yousuf Khan |

The dual core Athlon 64s are farther out but they are expected to be available in the 939 package. If you are thinking about an Opteron system wait a few weeks, the dual core parts are definitely the way to go. Here is a link to a review on the dual core Opterons. It's in Chinese but the translate function in Firefox works well enough so that you can get the gist of what they are saying. http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/dualcore-opteron-1.htm |

Yousuf Khan For socket 939 I think AMD is going to release both a compatible version with existing chipsets with a restricted memory controller, and then a few months later release a new line without the restrictions on the controller that will probably require an updated chipset/socket. My reasoning (aside from their own PR) is that they don't make their own chipsets very often and the leading chipsets for them are made by other companies. There would be a bit of lag time for the outside chipset makers to come up with a new one for a new memory controller. I could be wrong, I'm being purely speculative and trusting a bit of their PR ... But it seems like the logical thing to do given the current restraints they are under. I'm going to go wash my car so it will rain. -Timbertea |

Yousuf Khan I was thinking mostly in the opteron market. Since the dual cores will/should be out shortly, I think I will wait for an updated motherboard. charles.... |
