Default Acer 3680 laptop broken screen problem

I was given an Acer 3680 laptop with a physically broken (cracked
screen). It lights up and dims but I cannot make out an image. Also it
lacks a hard drive. I have tried to get it to display an image on a vga
monitor by inserting a Ubuntu disc in the CD drive and hitting Fn F5.
But no luck. Any other ideas? Must I buy a hard drive first? Thanks. I
was hoping to see the bios screen or something.
