Good cheap graphics card?

Not a gamer but going to upgrade to AMD XP2800 Barton/AsusA7N8X Delux/512
Crucial.
Can't decide on a lower end graphics card.
Think its between Geforce FX 5200, Geforce FX5600XT or Radion 9200SE or
Radion 9600SE.
I'd be glad for advice from experienced members.
Also, does anyone know off hand which of the above have passive cooling and
which have fans?

Do yourself a big favour... don't buy any of them :-) Save up for a
9600Pro/XT at the very least. Unless you're just after 2d performance, in
which case spend as little as possible.

If you're worried about noise, places like Ebuyers do some good cheap card
coolers. Bit of a fiddle to fit, but nothing too scary... once you're
finished and have seen the working results anyway!

Surely if he's not into games a geforce 440 ( passive cooling ) is dirt
cheap now - around 30 quid, and it's pretty respectable on most games too.

Good point. But this is an overclocking newsgroup, and nobody overclocks
to run MS Word a little faster :-) Of course if it's an upgrade (sounds
like it) then the easy answer is keep whatever's there already... unless
it's onboard, in which case there are plenty of cheap cards on Ebay and
the like.

Don't touch the Radeon 9200, even the 8500 (64MB or 128MB) are way better
than the 9200. It really is a 'budget' card the bottom end of the current
generation, the 8500 was the peak of the previous generation and so a better
card. Do yourself a favour, hold off a little while longer as there are
price drops ahead - then buy a Radeon 9600 Pro.

Personally, i would go for a 5600 non XT, about £80 now.

If youre not into the newest games, then an MX440 or FX5200 (which are the
same speed) will do just fine.

I was going to get a 9600XT but my 8500LE has proved to be more than
enough paired with my overclocked 2500+

I'm getting the Sapphire 9200SE with 128MB, DVI and tv-out; that one's
fanless. Hercules and Asus usually add fans, even though the 9200SE
reference boards from ATI don't have one.
I'm paying ?55 for the Sapphire here in Belgium. It'll probably be cheaper
in a larger country.

I'm finding it hard to abandon my Radeon 8500 too! They were/are such good
little performers, the best of the previous generation, if you ask me.

gefroe 4 ti series cards are fast cards at dirt cheap prices! but their
geting hard to find, am keeping my ti 4200 8x agp untill the nv 40 boards
come out!!!! note i get 12 500 at 3d mark with drivers 43.xx with defult
settings and no ocing
