In windows, you can look at the hardware manager, of get a 3rd party
program like aida32.

what is aida32??? and I cannot look in the hardware manager prior to buying
the components... my main question I guess is are there certain motherboards
that won't work with certain cd-rom's (as an example) and is there a way to
find out what parts work with which other parts?

The answer is very complex, it would help us if we knew what type of
hardware your referring to. Most hardware works with other hardware nowadays
but there are a few exceptions. I doubt you will run into any conflicts
using common hardware found at most web stores.
