Default CPU Fan Paste Question

I have a CPU fan and I didn't notice but it had white paste on it. I
set it down and when I picked it up I saw the paste and that it smeared
all round it instead of the small outlined circle on the bottome where
it rests on the CPU. I have already purchased some more paste. I just
wiped all the paste off that came with the fan. Is this correct? It
was all over the thing. I thought it might blow up the CPU. Thanks.

Wiping it off is fine. Getting it all off is a good idea so that dust
won't stick to it. When applying the new paste, don't apply it on
the bottom of the heatsink. If you do that, some of it will be
outside the CPU-heatsink contact area, doing nothing but collect
dust. Apply a thin film evenly on the CPU instead. Some people
just apply a small gob on the CPU and let pressure do the rest.
