Default what is best model and configuration to buy from refurb site?

For a good all-around computer, what's the best price/performance? I was
thinking of the refurb 4500 or 4550. But what processor power? How much
video card (for at most occasional gaming and video manipulation). What
monitor? Should I fear bad pixels on flat panels? And what is the noticeable
differences between these two models similarly configured?

I also want to pose the same question about laptops, except that I have no
model numbers in mind. Again I believe I am looking for hardware of the
prior generation or the generation prior to that.

Where's the sweet spot now as far as price/performance?

TIA,

BB

the refurbed market.
