Default Permanent Selection of Recording Device "LIne In" in Windows 98

I am facing a great problem regarding the permanent selection of
recording device "Line In". Every time I boot the computer, I have to
select the recording device "Line In" manually. I have installed
Windows 98 plenty of times but the problem remains there. It is not
out of place to mention here that I can't afford to install a fresh
copy of the OS, because I have no other copy of an installed recording
software.
