computer shutdown
"Me" wrote in message ... Hi Guys.... I have had an ongoing problem with a computer now for a few months. The thing keeps shutting down ( No ... it is not the MSBLAST virus). It is a home-built machine. I have an ASUS P4B mainboard and a 1.7 Intel P4 processor. I have so far swapped the power supply and the RAM. The macine can run fine for days ... and sometimes it reboots 5 - 6 times a day.The temp of the CPU is usually around 40 - 45 Celsius. Is there any way I can find out what is causing it to reboot? It's the mainboard. ASUS calls it a "feature". Most likely you have bad capacitors on the boards, but it could be a number of other things. If you have access to another mainboard, I bet you'd find the system more stable if you tried it out. |

Once upon a time (Wed, 20 Aug 2003 10:09:56 -0400), Me came seeking
enlightenment from the community, after having tried everything possible to get it to work by (him|her)self. Failing that, they wrote: Hi Guys.... Thanks in advance Try downloading Knoppix. Knoppix is a Linux distribution which runs entirely from the CD. It does not touch your hard drive, although you will be able to read from it. It will not write to it unless you manually right-click on the icon for the drive and uncheck the "read-only" attribute. Boot it up, and play around. If the computer reboots, then it's almost definatly hardware. If not, then you may have a software or OS problem. Boot-from-CD distros are great for troubleshooting and data recovery. Knoppix download link: ftp://ftp.tu-ilmenau.de/Mirrors/knop...3-07-26-EN.iso Also, just out of curiosity, do you have a battery back up and/or surge protector? Could be a power spike damaged the motherboard? Shawn |
