Default Sound Cards. . .

On Thu, 10 Jul 2003 22:31:16 -0500, keith robinson pondered exceedingly, then
took quill in hand and carefully composed...

| Was wondering what sound card would be the best for the pc I built. .
| . any suggestions?. . . I know there are several but have no clue as
| to who makes the best or most reliable. . . .thanks, Keith

I used Creative (Sound Blaster) products for years, but dropped them in favor of
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. The Creative cards are really great, but Creative's
drivers aren't — especially if they get caught in a major OS upgrade such as
WinME to WinXP. The folks at Turtle Beach seem to know what they're doing when
it comes to writing code for drivers.

All that wouldn't really be important if things never changed once a soundcard
and driver set were initially released. But they do!

I have a Creative Audigy 2 working perfectly here in Windows XP. I will
say, I only use it to play music, nothing further than that. Before that, I
used the Audigy 1 then the SB Live - not only did they work successfully,
they seem very well made cards.

Additionally, Creative has not been known to be the fastest to release
drivers. I remember with the Audigy 1 or SBLive, they didn't release a
driver update in over a year.

What motherboard, CPU combination do you use?

Intel board and CPU? Well, I too use an Intel board and CPU and the Audigy
2 works perfectly. I think if I were you, I'd be looking for a card that
has low-CPU usage, good drivers and clear-quality sound.

I can't really comment on the Turtle Beach as I've never owned one, although
I'm sure they are good cards. I'm just saying on my Intel board and CPU,
the Audigy 2 works great.

Turtle Beach is hands down best value (in my not so humble opinion).

I've had SoundBlaster and don't recommend it. Turtle is a better
choice.
