novice asks - Installing a scanner

OK, so what do I do now? I want to be able to scan text documents and
phots. I would like to have the image of a text document processed to
extract the text in it to a word processor.

FILE menu - AQUIRE is usually where to go in an application to do
scanning.

To do OCR (Optical Character Recognition) you need an application
specifically for this task. Most scanners come with some kind of basic OCR
software.

For text recognition you definately need to install some OCR software
(Optical Character Recognition) such as Xerox Textbridge or Caere Omnipage.
Once installed, you will find an extra option in, for example, Word,
'aquire' that will scan a document and convert it to text in one step.

Besides what the other folks have mentioned you should install Epson's stand
alone program called Epson Photo Print.
Going to the Epson website for your machine shows the software to be
there. Once installed you should be able to scan from Epson's software
without Photoshop or other graphics program if you don't have one.

software of a manual.

The 1250 has a button on it. When you press that your system should
start up some sort of image capture software. As others have said, you
will also find an Acquire setting in the file menu of any other graphics
software you have.

If you need graphics or OCR software then you could do worse than look
at the Serif web site.

I thought I would never open "Paperport" again. I trashed it
the second or third day after installation, but they have improved
greatly and I recommend it... a great way to scan and organize.

I found a bunch of references to "smart panel" and "Epson" on
google. A bunch.

The CD is 207 megs that came with an Epson 1650 and will work with your
model. Let me know if there is interest and I'll dump it in a group

Personally I would go for ABBYY FineReader 5.0 Sprint. Very good
Optical Character Recognition Program and probably at a very
reasonable price. Easy to use as well.
