The fact that your AVI is not compliant does not mean that the

software
is broken.

Mike, it seems that you know the solution to the problem. I happen

to
have the same (?) problem. I searched the newsgroups and found a few
references to the same problem (at least the same error message),

but
no solution was proposed by anyone.

I've made only a few VCDs and have not yet used my DVD recorder for
video. What I've learned is that most software is choosy about needing
whitebook format and that you are better off either encoding first to
MPEG with a good compressor or ensuring that your AVI is compliant.

As Graham said, one good choice is TMPGEnc. If you find audio/video

sync
problems even then, you have a problem. The best MPEG1 encoder I've
found is the now-defunct Xing - bought and abandoned by RealNetworks.
Another choice is the Panasonic, but I have had inconsistent results
with it.

I will add my bit VCD is mpeg 1 DVD and Svcd are Mpeg 2 Nero does the
conversion from uncompressed avi to mpeg. Avi is also the extension for
Avid Divx and a few more that are already compressed Hence Nero can not
uncompress and recompress to mpeg You know when you have a uncompressed
avi as its 3.5 MB per sec.
Movies downloaded from P2P will be heavily compressed

Muhammed is the most popular name in the world. It's appalling

You replaced them. A considerable step backward in the evolutionary

I was frightened by the idea of a conspiracy that was

But then I was terrified that maybe there was no plan,
really. Is this unpleasant mess all a mistake?

I will repeat another poster's question: compliant to what? please
provide a URL that describes the laws the my AVI should comply with.

Are you suggesting what the original poster was suggesting, that
NeroVision Express is not fit for the job of transferring my
DV-camcorder shot videos into mini-DVD?

Uh Oh... It seems that I wasted my money :-(

NeroVision Express v.2 that ships with V6 of Burning Rom is a bit fussy, but
the latest update (v.6.0.3? I think) from www.ahead.de seems much more
stable and forgiving of different AVI codecs (XVID, DivX etc.) - I've burnt
a few video DVDs since uorgrading without incident. The other bit of
software I've found to be quite good is Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD (it came
free with a firewire card).

Phil, thanks. I don't know about the original poster, but I use the
latest and greatest update from Nero's web site. The about box of Nero
Visition Express says the version is 2.1.0.4.

Also I am not trying any peculiar AVI codec such XVID or DivX, only
the one from generated by my Studio DV software.

Any idea other than trying this TMPGenc that everyone seems to
recommend?

Thanks,
Sam

The first thing you should do is try a normal uncompressed AVI. Just a small
sample to see if it works. It is possible that this is caused by a codec
issue. If it chokes on uncompressed RGB, then Nero stinks, but if it
doesn't, at least you can start a process of elimination to figure out
what's going on. Maybe it's not the video, that's the problem. Could it be
that the audio is bad or the wrong specs? DVD needs 48000hz audio, and maybe
Nero doesn't like to re-compress if it's 44.100 or 32.000? I am just
guessing here, hoping that some of this might be helpful.
