Can you say what the piece of electronic equipment was and roughly how

much
it cost?

Yup, it was a Sony Minidisc recorder, and it cost ~£210. Recently it
stopped recording completely, all by itself (£200 is a lot of dough - I
treated it pretty well!).

Not an expert but I would say its quite reasonable to expect a £200+
Minidisc to last for more than 18 months, assuming it hasn't been abused etc

18 months out of a Sony? I'd say he did well.

I once bought one of their portable CD players, thinking I was paying
a bit more for a quality product. Lasted out of warranty (very light
use) then failed. Their service centre charged a hefty "inspection
charge" and returned it working "no fault found". Lasted a week,
failed again. Service centre claimed as they had done nothing to it,
no guarentee on the repair. An independant repair tech looked at it
for free, pronounced the laser knackered, told me the laser unit
concerned is well known in the trade as a FPOS. I reckon the service
centre tweaked the laser setup to get the last of the life out of it
to avoid telling me this. Last Sony kit I will buy.
