Default Fluctuating Burn Speeds

The last few days, whenever I burn a cd or dvd, my burn speed fluctuates
wildly and therefore takes longer than normal to burn.
I've used different media.
I've even used different burn programs
I have DMA enabled.
I've disabled firewall and virus scanning
I've shut down every program that was running in the background.
Nothing works.
Before, I could burn at full speed while doing none of the above.
I have a 3.0 Gigahertz with 1GB of ram.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You are describing what happens when buffer underrun protection kicks
in. Try burning at a lower speed - the total time should be less if you
do not underrun.

Though you have suppressed all the obvious background programs, some
processes are probably still running. The firewall has nothing to do
with burning so may be left on. However, you should check the background
processes (method varies with unnamed OS) to see what's running that may
be shut down.

Uninstall the IDE controller that the burner is on and reboot. this will
force a reinstall of the driver and re-set DMA.
