Default artec 52x drive and/o BackUpMyPc

I ran backupmypc by Veritas with my Sony USB 6x4x6 without problems.

Now upgrading to an internal CDR, ARTEC CDRW52x24x52 , I get
intermittent disk damage, usually after one or two backups.

Any take on this. Artec support had me delete all drivers for CDR and
CDROMS but I run backups so seldom I can't be sure if this is a good
fix. It would be nice to know if this is an issue and a certain fix is
available.

using win98se
