Default Restore

I have Dell Recovery drive (used 5 of 10 GB) and was wondering if I should image this partition in case I can't get access to the backup drive.

Is this a good idea - attempt to restore from a DVD

Can you recommend a good free software utility to back up the drive (it will need to compress)

The Linux world has all manner of very good and very free utilities for mucking around with partitions and drives. You can try Clonezilla or Parted Magic. Yes, they recognize NTFS and FAT partitions. Also, Apple partitions, however they may be formatted. Also, EaseUs has a number for free programs for doing things to partitions.

But I am not sure what you want to do, and what the end result would be. Why burn a DVD? Why not copy to a flash memory stick? 16GB ones are regularly on sale at Best Buy and on-line for around $10, and an 8GB stick would seem to be good enough to contain what you want to copy... Ben
