Default semi-OT (monitors)

time to buy a new monitor, this little 15 inch CRT is just not good enough
anymore (if it ever was)

Anywho, i think a 19" crt is the shot, i don't need much bigger than that,
and LCD's are still too pricey for their performance. Of course this is my
opinion, lets leave that argument aside.

so, who can recommend a brand and model. the aim is under AU$500, hopefully
flat screen, able to do 1600*1200 at decent refresh (ie. above 75Hz). i'm
not overly worried about appearance, although if it comes in black that is
better.

thanks folks

I just replaced a Mag-Innovision 19" that was begining to flicker. Bought an
Envision 19" flat crt in black/silver for just under 200 dollars US. It's
not a bad monitor for the price. Not as good as say a sony, but for the
price, it does perform and look well. .25 pixel pitch if I recall correctly
and it does 1600x1200 at a resolution around 75Hz.

I love my Samsung SyncMaster 955df . It's 19", great rez and hasn't let me
down. It's about $300 Canadian and comes in black for 10 bucks more.

what advantages does a sony display (for example) have over a similarly
speced lesser known brand? if it is the same as say a tv, where a sony brand
name represents quality and reliability. Even if the specs are the same the
sony will still cost more, and that extra cost can be put down as accounting
for that reliability and quality. is it the same as in the computer monitor
world? The problem is i have never heard of envision, and that rings alarm
bells in my head on issues such as quality ad reliability. Like buying a
panafonics Tv and not the sony. Maybe they have the same specs, but the sony
is most likelu gonna last a lot longer than the panafonics, chinese
knock-off brand.

thanks for the replies by the way

Sony tubes are known for their extremely high performace and dot pitch. The
Trinitron crts are the best (imho) a person can get but who wants to pay
upwards of 700 US for a 17-19" monitor unless you do extreme graphics where
precision is a major factor. The Envision are, as far as I know, a newer
brand on the market but they seem to perform real well. I have purchased
the 19" flat crt as well as 2 17" traditional crt's of the same brand and in
the past year I have had the 17" monitors, I have yet to have a problem.
Graphics seem crisp, colors look good and refresh rates also look real well.

I also have a Samsung SyncMaster 950p, which has served me well for 2+ years so
far. I bought it because it was highly rated at the time, and I had some lousy
experiences with another brand name.

I've also read good things about the 955df, so I think it's definitely worth a
look, or other Samsung monitors.
