Default Drag n' Burn disaster

I have a new Plextor PX-716UF dvd/cd burner with Roxio's OEM version of
Easy Media Creator 7.0. It has a burn 'n drag feature which is pretty
convenient (the miserable documentation and interface of EMC, as well as
Roxio's lousy website and utter distain of OEM buyers put me off big time).

OK, the drag 'n burn features works perfectly and cleanly with dvd-rw's
but it is just killing dvd-r's. Starts writing files and then craps out.
Discs wrecked. Anybody have any thoughts on this? I do have another cd
burner on my system as well as CD-Mate burning software. Could there be
a conflict here?

Any thoughts welcome. Haven't made coasters for a long time -- nor have
I used Adaptec/Roxio products for a long time.

By the way, the Plextor is very nice and when I had a couple of problems
initially (related, of course to Roxio's lousy interface) the Plextor
help desk guy was just great. My second Plextor burner and now I know
why I stick with the brand. Why they sick with Roxio is another matter.

Maybe it's related to this DirectCD (Drag-to-Disc) problem with large
files:

======================
From: Mike Richter (Slimy Friggin SOB)
Date: 10/7/02
Subject: Direct CD - I know, I know, but could somebody help?

... I formatted a new CDR, and successfully burned a 200 MB
mpeg file to it. I even ejected it, put it back in, played the
file, and everything seemed ok.)

But then when I tried to burn the second large file, it appeared
to write only about 20 seconds of the mpeg, and then just stopped.

packet writing is made for drag-and-drop of smaller files ...

Mikey, you are the Slimiest Friggin SOB!
