Default Ejecting DVD+RW while background formatting in progress

I was burning some video to DVD+RW using Pinnacle Studio 8.0.

Towards the end of the process, Studio indicates that "background
formatting" is in progress, but the LED on my Pioneer A06 is not even
on. Nothing seems to be happening and this goes on for quite a while
(something like 10 minutes). Eventually Studio would say "burn
completed".

I have ejected the disc a few times before the "burn complete" stage
and it seems to play ok (no harm).

My question : what is happening during background formatting? Is there
any harm in the early eject?
