Default CDR/DVDR speed reduced. Why?

My XPSP2 system has 2 DVD burners (LG GSA-H10A [16x] and LG GSA H-22N
[18x]). A while back I started burning some data to DVD and was annoyed
by the fact that it was burning at 4x. I thought I must have not changed
a setting in the burning programme (CDBurnerXP) but it was set at 4x
which was the max available. Then I thought the DVDs must have been
wrongly labelled and couldn't wait until I used them up and bought some
"better" [Memorex] ones.

Well, I used the "better" 16x ones and the burners still only went up to
4x. I then removed both drives from within Device Manager, rebooted and
now they show up as being able to read/write at 8467kbs when checked
through the info in CDBurnerXP.

I tried to check the drive info in the freeware NeroCDSpeed but it gives
me an error saying "could not initialise the wnaspi32.dll". I got hold
of the wnaspi32.dll, stuck it in system/system32, rebooted but it still
won't work. An earlier version of DriveSpeed worked and gave me a record
speed of 4x when I burnt a test DVD.

1. What could have changed my drives' speeds in the first place?
2. Is wnaspi32.dll needed? I assume it might have been pre XPSP2.
3. Any ideas how to solve this speed problem? 8x is okay, but it will
bug me no end not knowing why this has happened.

Thanks,
any pointers appreciated,
R.

Windows has a habit of changing the transfer mode of parallel ATA
interfaces limiting maximum transfer speed. It does it automatically when
it detects controller errors. It has been a troublesome area depending on
which IDE controller you have. Depending on the controller it might inherit
the transfer mode set (or decided) by the BIOS.

De- and re-installing the drives probably set the mode back to default.

You need UDMA33 mode and preferably UDMA66 mode for high speed DVD drives.

You need 80 way IDE cables for UDMA66 and they are preferable for UDMA33.

You might find some information and options in the property pages for your
controller in device manager.

Think you have aspi problem. Download wnaspi32.dll from here
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/
and place it in the same NeroCDSpeed folder. If NeroCDSpeed then runs
without the aspi error, you have aspi problem.

Download ForceAspi 4.71 and install ASPI 4.71. It may be a good idea
first run KillAspi.
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm

There is Nero InfoTool at http://www.cdspeed2000.com. It has ASPI tab
which gives the status of aspi layer, and Disc tab which gives disc
info.

You may also be using dvd discs that your burners don't recognize.
Update the firmwares to the latest if available, and then try with
Verbatim brand discs.

Then check with NeroCDSpeed. Post back how it went.

(DVD 1x = CD 9x = 9* 150 = 1350 KB/sec)

Default CDR/DVDR speed reduced. Why?

From time to time I have had speed probs also.
On multiple occasions I've found under Device Manager/IDE ATA
Controllers, the primary or secondary channel that a device is
connected to has changed to "PIO" Mode.
At this point, trying to change it to "DMA if available" never works,
and the only solution is to un-install that channel (in Device
Manager) then reboot, which then recognises that channel and
re-installs the necessary driver.
Don't know if this is what's happening to you, but worth a look.
Cheers
Gary

Mine are both set to DMA (one ultra 33 and one ultra 66). I have them
both on the same channel as I never use both drives at the same time. I
have removed the drives in Device manager but they remain the same. Do
you mean remove the ATA channel itself in Device Manager as opposed to
each drive? Hadn't thought of that.

I am also thinking of ripping the drives out and making one per channel
to see if it is a cabling issue. I have tried the things others have
suggested here to no avail, though all suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the reply matey.

They should be OK, as they show as DMA.
Removing the drives in Device Manager never helped me, but
un-installing the IDE channel itself was the only way I could get a
change from "PIO" mode back to "DMA"
Sorry I can't be of further help.

Download NeroDiscSpeed_41140.zip, NeroInfoTool_403.zip and wnaspi32.dll
into the same folder:
http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/

InfoTool_403 has ASPI tab. Post back what the tab lists.

"ASPI is installed and working properly" (I followed the link you gave me
about the ASPI layer).

One interesting thing that may or may not be of importance though,
is the difference between in drive tab info for each drive.

DRIVE F: Read 48x, Write 48x, C2 errors ticked
DRIVE G: Read "n/a", Write 48x, C2 errors UNticked

Both show as DVD-RAM drives.

Thanks,
R.

What are the version numbers?

Run the NeroCDSpeed and see if you still get "could not initialise the
wnaspi32.dll".

Insert non-blank CD (and DVD) discs in G: and see if C2 changes.

Also do [CDSpeed, ScanDisc] in G:. Does it scan, that is, show
green/yellow/red blocks?

Do the read and write speeds change when you put in different speed
rated blank dvd?
