IDE drive doesn't work in system with SATA drive
I've got an extra IDE drive that I wanted to add to my system that has
one SATA drive. When both are connected the IDE drive will not format or pass diags while in XP or when booted up off the Western Digital utilities floppy. If I disconnect the SATA drive the IDE formats and diags fine. The IDE is on it's own cable and jumpered as the only drive. It worked fine in the PC I took it out of and it works fine when by itself in this PC (ASUS MVP-A8R) Any ideads what else to check? |

I looked at the settings and don't see anything about IDE drives. I've got serial ATA controller enabled, onboard SATA boot ROM disabled and SATA mode selection set emulated PATA mode. |

IDE drive doesn't work in system with SATA drive
I made some headway in debugging this problem. I have the DVD drive as
primary master and the IDE hard drive as secondary master. So I decided to swap them and their cables. Bingo, the HD works and the DVD drive has problems. Swap them back and it's back to the HD having problems. So it appears there's something flaky with the secondary IDE port except that I had previously successfully formated the drive booting off the Western Digital utility floppy. The BIOS settings for the IDE ports are all set to auto. I wonder if something isn't getting detected right and if I would have better luck manually setting the port? |
