Slow hp lto with ntbackup...
Hi to all...
I've a speed trouble with ntbackup... When i test the drive with the hp l&tt utility, i record a tranfer rate of 30mb/s with compression 2:1, but when i use ntbackup i not get more than ~3mb/s, and the tape stops often. The lto is connected at the same bus of a lvd/se dds-4, the dat is connected at 40mb/s, and the lto is connected at 80mb/s. (reported by the scsi bios scan). I use a 29160 scsi HBA. I have the dds set with the 'term_power' jumper, and there is the terminator at the end of the ribbon cable (certified for scsi 160 lvd/ se).. I've tryed all driver configurations (with both windows drivers and hp/ adaptec dirvers, with no results) The hard drives that has the data to be backed up are in raid-5 configuration, and are capable of 80mb/s... Why with the hp test utility i get 30mb/s while with ntbacup i get only 3mb/s? Thanks to all! |

Because ntbackup needs to read real data from your disk, ntbackup uses small tape blocks and ntbackup is a terrible piece of software. lt&t can use random data or even all-zeroes directly from memory. Try real backup software. Rob |

Really thans for all the help that you give me! Ntbackup is the 'dumbed-down' version of Veritas BackupExec. You can use BackupExec if you want to. BackupExec has decent support for clients, databases etc. Another option which I like is NetVault (www.bakbone.com). Works well, has good performance and can be tested for free for 45 days. It does require a bit getting used to, because the GUI is not a typical Windows GUI. Try it and see how it works for you. Rob |
