So far, removing everything "Microsoft" except the C++
distribution leaves the machine working.

You must be running a Linux distro, then. ;) ... Ben Myers

It's stuff like Silverlight, .NET*, MSXML*, Windows Live, ...

God knows what it does, but I don't seem to need it.

Linux is my fallback plan when MS craps out somehow; at the moment
I run Cygwin under XP, so everything works like linux anyway, except
there are actual drivers for the hardware because it's XP.

Okay, now I understand. Silverlight is not needed for anything except
Microsoft stuff. .NET is a misnomer if there ever was one, because it
provides software developers with application programmatic interfaces to
write software that talks across the internet AND/OR even runs all alone
there on a Windows computer with no connection to the outside world.
(Examples: the otherwise excellent CDBurnerXP, AMD/ATI Catalyst)
Windows Live is Microsoft's attempt at cloud computing.

Did you ever see Windows DEAD??? Microsoft never advertises it like
they do Windows Live. Windows DEAD is any one of a number of BSODs.
