from the case. I disconnected all drives, and the video card. I
removed the CPU then put it back. Yet the behavior is still the

Among the things I would try is:
Different RAM = single stick of "standard" RAM - low cost, bog-standard
stuff; small size OK. I keep a 256MG stick of DDR2 I bought at a retail
store after asking for "the cheapest stick of DDR2 you have".
Some ASUS motherboards are well known for being picky about RAM......
