CPU temp
I just got done putting my first system together (p4 2.4 in an SS51 case.)
What CPU temps are considered normal, and at what point do I need to be worried? The CPU uses Shuttle's heat pipe technology, not the fan supplied with the CPU. I did put some thermal grease on it, spread more or less over the whole chip. |

My P4 2.4 with an ASUS P4B533 Motherboard and a Zalman Flower heatsink runs
between 96-114F (35-45C). According to the ASUS Probe utility the temp threshhold is 152F (67C). You may find specs. he http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm Harry Palms wrote: I just got done putting my first system together (p4 2.4 in an SS51 case.) What's the best way to clean the chip prior to applying the compound? The
instructions emphasized removing all the oils i.e. from fingerprints before puttting the compound on the chip. I used one of their recommendations, alcohol on a swab, but I wonder if alcohol really dissolves oil. |

OK, they say Isopropol alcohol 70% by volume, so I guess that's what I
needed. How do you remove the compound? If I ever go to swap the chip for a faster one, I don't want that silver get smeared on the pins. |

No, you want 99% pure Isopropol....q-tips work fine. Lint free cloth...

I just use the regular isopropyl alcohol (70% or better) and have used it for many years without problems. Sometimes the compound is hardened and tough to remove, that's when I will use lighter fluid first. Make sure that the HS surface is also cleaned up well. OK, when I'm ready to take it out I'll take your advice from you guys. I
just don't want a gooey mess all over the place, because if I get it on the pins I'm hosed, and if I get it on the carpet or couch I'm as good as dead. One more question...can anyone recommend a CPU temp monitor that lives in the system tray? I can use SandaSoft to monitor the temp, but I only have a 17" monitor, and the program takes up a lot of screen real estate when one little bit of info is all I seek. |
