Default MP3 Surround Sound?

If you make a MP3 recording of a CD that originally was recorded in surround
sound do you loose the surround sound data?

I think mp3 can't cope with 5.1 channel sound. But mp4 format can (AAC), or
ordinary wav.But you must have a program which can handle 5.1 channel
recording.
