Default 510S Can't Fax

My Gateway experience:

Delivery took six weeks.
It came with wrong software disk and authorization code(MS Office) and
the wrong mouse. That took another week and a half to get.

When I tried to use the fax, I find that it makes the call, the fax
answers, but no connection is established and it fails. This happens
when sending and receiving, with different fax machines. Has anybody
found a fix for this? The fax modem is an Intel 537EP. I have tried
Windows XP fax and a couple of different fax programs. Nothing works at
all. The line is good, the old computer sent faxes fine.

"Support" wasted a couple hours of my time and then wanted to reformat
and reload the OS. That will take hours and then all my program
installation and setup will be wiped out. I wish I had sent it back
within 15 days, but I didn't even know by then.

The higher level support is sending me a new modem. I don't think they
really know how to diagnose the problem.

Bob,

Often, changing the initialization string will help the modem connect.
As for what initialization string to try, I can't tell you right off.
Gateway
might have some ideas. I know this fix has worked for me.
