Default A7N266-VM sound problems

Dear friends,

I know there is supposed to be a solution to this problem, but I just can't
seem to find the right one.

The hardwa

ASUS A7N266-VM mainboard (Rev. 1.05) BIOS v 1.07
AMD 2400 XP ("Thoroughbread") CPU
512 MB PC 2100 (266 Mhz) DDR RAM
WD 80 GB (8MB) IDE HDD

BIOS: Audio "Auto". Game Port: Enabled I/U 0200-0207. MIDI: MPU-401 enabled
I/U 0330-0331 IRQ 10.

OS: Windows XP Professional SP2

The problem:

After having installed Windows XP Professional SP2 (sound still working), I
updated the nVidia nForce drivers to version 5.10. This caused a blue screen
crash, with the subsequent loss of any sound (I can hear "hiss" through the
speakers, though, but no sound). I tried installing the WinXP/Win2K Audio
Driver version 4.57 thereafter, but still no sound. I have tried
uninstalling the new (nForce and gForce-) drivers and installed older ones
(nForce 3.13), but with no success.

I should mention that the PC has Creative Media Source software installed,
as the owner (my niece) has a Creative Nomad MP3 player attached to it.

I suspected a hardware failure, and tried to install a Creative SoundBlaster
Live Value sound card into one of the PCI slots. Surprise! No sound from
this card either (audio function was of course disabled in BIOS). Hence, the
problem is unlikely to be caused by hardware failure.

Can anyone help me with this problem?? Any suggestion will be most welcome.

With regards,

Cato A. Guldberg
