Default external hard drive w/ error


when i plug in my external hard drive in pc it shows weird signs(not w/
letter). i click on it and it shows file names and folder names have
been changed into some values w/ 0 kb. when i click on it said ERROR:
FILE NAME, DIRECTORY NAME, OR VOLUME LABEL SYNTAX IS INCORRECT

is there any way to recover my hard drive? it used to work fine.

hope someone can help....and thanks in advance
