Default * compact * laser AIO - does it exist?

I need to get a laser printer + AIO for a small office - literally a
small office. Space, particularly height, is at a premium.

Any suggested vendors and models? Any vendors and models to avoid
like the plague?

I have the impression that Lexmark products are all pretty bad. Is
that true? (honest question, not a troll!)

Lexmark inkjets are total garbage. I hear that their moderately priced
lasers are OK but I really am not sure. Stay away from Brother. HP
should be investigated.

If you can skip the flatbed, there are some smaller models. The Brother
7225 claims to be 14.7" wide by 14.7" deep by 10.3" high. You'd need at
least a little free space over it to reach paper and buttons. Depends
on how far back under a cabinet it might be, too. The 7220 is the same
size, but only GDI and no Ethernet.

These are just specs from web pages; I haven't used either machine.

High-end Lexmark printers are supposed to be very good. The low-end
stuff is very low. Personally, I avoid all Lexmark equipment because
their stance on chipped toner seems anti-customer.

In this part of the world Brother HL 2040 laser printer is on special
for $60, much less than the cost alone of its drum and toner.
Its fooprint is 13 inches square (measured) and it is about 6 inches
high. The paper drawer is underneath (as in HPs) and ouput lies
on top of the case.

What I'm finding is that you can have two of three, but not all three
in one (affordable) product. That's why I posted my question.

Andrew,
I have a Samsung SCX-4100 AIO. It Prints/Scans/Copies, it does not fax. But
you can use third party fax software for that. The control panel is a little
small on the front of the machine, and can be hard to view, especially when
using it as a standalone copier. For printing and scanning, you can use the
application's interface, to run your particular job. The PC that it connects
to via USB port, must be on, if sending print jobs from other PC's in your
network. I do not have a Print server, and I do not know if all the
functions of this device will work while attached to a print server, so a PC
would not be required to be running while using this device over a network.
Someone else may be able to give you more information on that.

Size Specs:
The SCX-4100 AIO measures 9.4 by 16.6 by 15.8 inches (HWD) and weighs just
21.1 pounds.

Replacement toner and/or toner cartridges (generic) are reasonable priced,
if you buy from an honest/reputable vendor, for this Samsung AIO. Something
that Lexmark in my opinion fails at miserably, in both the ink jet & laser
lines, very costly for the consumables. The main reason I never recommend
their products to my friends or family.

Thanks. I just read some reviews and the problem for me is that it
doesn't have an ADF. Right now I'm using a Canon MP 530, which is an
inkjet printer AIO. The ADF is a huge convenience factor for
scanning, copying, or faxing.

I'm afraid that if the tradeoff for having a compact AIO is no ADF,
then I'm going to have to find a way to live with an AIO that is not
so compact.

Tradeoffs. Always.
