Hardware Compression for Disk-to-Disk Backups
I am investigating hardware compression options in a disk-to-disk
backup environment. Does anyone know of any existing solutions which provide hardware compression with support for disk-to-disk backups on a Windows 2003 Server running Veritas Backup Exec? I have only found what appears to be a preliminary product from IndraNetworks which currently has drivers for Linux but no Windows support. Any information is appreciated. Thanks. |

Check out diligent (www.diligent.com). Their Protectier VT product is essentially backup to disk, but in a unique way. They do data compression by identifying identical data sections across all data that is stored on disk, not just a small buffer. That way they claim to be able to get incredible storage compression rates. It's also a virtual tape solution that allows you to use your existing backup software, even if it has no disk-to-disk functionality. Disclaimer: I have not used the product, I have only received their marketing 'shower'... Their story sounds good and viable, but I have no hands-on experience yet... Rob |
