Default IDE channel corrupt?

Hi there,

I switched on my computer last night to find that my BIOS was not
recognising any of my drives. After narrowing it down to a fault on
the secondary IDE channel, i removed the cd drive from the secondary
channel and the cable from the port. everything now works fine,
except i can't use my second cd drive. when i plug any drive into the
secondary channel, the bios will not recognize any drive.

Is there any way to fix this, or is my motherboard fecked?

Here are my computer details (btw, this happened on reboot after i had
installed mIRC)

Jetway 845e P3 Motherboard
P3 1Ghz Processor
512MB RAM
WinXP Professional
Geforce 2 MX 400 64MB

if your 2nd ide channel is bad
you don;t have to scrap out the mobo
you can get a pci controller

check device manager to see if windows is reporting any errors with ide

One problem with that is that a BIOS detection problem can cause Device
Manager to show a yellow excl. on the channel. You never can tell, you know.

have you tried reseting the bios ?
if the ide cables are the same (ATA 33) with black ends
try swapping them over - you could try a new ide cable -
its more likely thats gone duff than the mobo and its a lot cheaper. btw -
you say 2nd cdrom on the ide 2 port - sounds like youve got a hdd and cdrom
on ide 1 and another cdrom on ide2 ? better to have hdds on ide 1 and cdroms
on ide 2.

Thanks for all the responses.

As for device manager, it does not show a yellow exclamation mark, as
i had previously checked that. I'm not sure whether it couldbe the
cable, but i'll get another cable and try that one. I've got my
cd-rom and HDD on IDE1 as i want to be able to copy "on the fly", and
needed to daisy chain 1 cd-rom away from the IDE that the other cd-rom
was on.

Does anyone know about Jetway P3 motherboards? i can't find the
manual, and therefore don't know the jumper settings to reset the bios
and clear NVRAM.

Cheers,

David
