Default Problems with Presario 700 (711AU)

Now, I have read a number of posts from people with 700s which are locking
up due to overheating. Compaq, of course, won't acknowledge my emails.

If they send it back saying they can't see anything wrong with it, how can

I
prove that it's not working properly? About the only thing I can think of
it videotaping it.

I'd also be very keen to hear from anyone else with a 700 or Evo N115 who
has had similar problems. Perhaps if I can show other people have the

same
problems, they won't look at me like I'm imagining it.

Hi !

First of all, there is a customer advisory available abouth this overheating
issue (see below, advisory that recommends a KBC (and BIOS, usually too)
update first)

Also, if this is not enough, usually heatsink replacement is suggested by
Tech Support if unit still under warranty.

Hope this helps a little bit !

Serge

customer advisory : "Presario 700xx And Evo N115 Notebooks May Overheat Or
Shut Down"

DOCUMENT NUMBER: PH020108_CW01 REVISION: 0
Presario 700xx And Evo N115 Notebooks May Overheat Or Shut Down

RELEASE DATE: June 2002
DESCRIPTION
Notebook operates slower, hotter or even shuts down.

SCOPE
All Presario 700xx and Evo N115 Notebooks with 1.x GHz processors with
Keyboard Controller BIOS (KCB) prior to rev. 11.16.

RESOLUTION
The above issue has been identified as an issue with the KCB thermal tables.

The KCB firmware prior to rev. 11.16 did not properly control the throttling
process when mouse/TouchPad activity would occur in parallel to the
throttling event. The end results are sluggish performance with respect to
the use mouse/TouchPad. This has been corrected in the KCB rev. 11.16
(SP21392) and later.

Compaq Softpaqs are available for download from the Compaq WEB site,

http://www.compaq.com/support/files/.../us/index.html or
http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_list.asp or
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/

NOTE: If the above KCB update does not resolve this issue, please have the
unit scheduled for service.
