Have you tried resetting the desk top..??
Right click an empty area and select properties then click the desktop
tab, click the customize button finally click restore default. Close
all windows and restart your computer.

Yeah, I know the feeling. Every few weeks some drunk comes
along and pinches my recycling bin, so I've taken to keeping it
padlocked to the main wheelie bin.
Oh, you meant the bit of electrons on your computer desktop?
You've lost it? As in, it's disappeared form the desktop and you don't
know how to get it back? I think that means that you're on XP? And you
(or someone using the machine) has been tinkering around in the desktop
properties (right-click on the desktop, "properties", and I think it's
under "effects" ; I don't do XP myself) and found the bit where you can
specify that certain parts of the desktop scenery get (or don't get)
displayed. That's the most likely cause.
