Shopping at NewEgg

I gave 350 bucks for a Sapphire video card. It came with a 20 rebate.
You have to print the invoice and cut off the bar code send it in. I
find out 3 months later that they refused the rebate because the
invoice did not have the date.

I requested an invoice from newegg with the date on it. They sent me
one in Office 2007 format that will not format properly with Open
Office.

Would someone check and old invoice and see if newegg furnishes the
date with the invoice? I can find the old invoice but it does not
have the date on it.

I am pretty ****ed about the amount of trouble it is taking to get my
rebate. I may shop elsewhere. If I don't get my rebate there will
be no more Sapphire products for sure. I read on the web that you
pretty much have to beg for a rebate you never get.

If you don't have copies of Microsoft Office ($$$), Microsoft
also offers "viewers" for things like Word, for free. If the
document is a Microsoft Word document, you download a "viewer"
from Microsoft, and you can print from the menu there.
Viewers are available, for the various Office tools.
In this case, you may need the services of a "compatibility pack",
to translate the document into something the viewer can open
(which really, should not be necessary). Office versions
are a patchwork quilt, if you do a lot of this sort of
thing.

There are various kinds of "pseudo-printers" you can use. A
good one, would be one that makes a PDF file directly (if you
were sending an email to Sapphire). There may also be printers
that "print to image", making a BMP, TIFF, etc. Or even a
PostScript printer, where when you print to file, you get a
..ps file, and that can be converted with GhostScript to other
things. There are a wealth of tricks you can use, to turn the
"print" menu in Word, into something useful.

You can easily make a paper copy of your 2007 doc, using
any printer already in the print menu.

You can go to your account on Newegg and get a copy of the invoice of
any order you've made, even years later, and the invoice prints the
date on it as well as a complete description of the item(s) you
purchased. It you chose to save it as a MS Word file, I guess that's
your choice. There's a "button" that says "print". I usually just
print a hard copy if I need that, otherwise print to a PDF file.

You're probably looking at a packing slip. Unless you print one out,
there won't be any invoice generated to hard copy.

I don't like rebates, but sometimes get in a position where I'm stuck
with it. Floating in the back of my mind is the idea for a website,
****rebates.com or something similar, where I would propose a consumer's
philosophy:

To manufacturers offering mail-in rebates: **** you. We know
that the only reason you do it is because of the regrettable
reality that many people will be encouraged to buy your product,
considering the reduced price, but fail to actually collect the
rebate.

From now on, when I'm tempted to buy a product with a MIB, I
will instead submit the product to ****rebates.com, and buy a
competitor's offering, even if the unadjusted price is still a
better deal.

Then, each month, I would send a report to the manufacturers stating
how much money they lost, and implicitly how much antagonism they've
generated, by gambling on our sloth and ineptitude.

I cannot recall if I have ever received a Sapphire rebate, but several
years ago, I purchased one of their video cards with a $10 MIB. While
filling out their online form, they repeatedly stated in bold red
lettering (paraphrasing):

IF YOU MAKE ONE MISTAKE, YOU'LL NEVER SEE A PENNY FROM US

When it came to the portion of the form where I had to identify the
SKU of the product being rebated, an exact match for my purchase was
not in their drop-down list. ****ers.

I opened a chat with newegg, and they credited me the $10 as soon as
I could managed to explain myself. Sapphire bought $100 worth of
antagonism off me that day, and Newegg earned $100 worth of good will.

I knew a guy who had a company heavily into rebate giving. He
actually was the company processing rebates for other companies. He
cheerfully admitted to me, without any guilt whatsoever, that the way
these companies made money was to make sure a certain percentage (did
not tell me what that number was) of rebate submissions by customers
are not approved. That was their profit. So you can see, especially
if you offer a bonus to every one of your minimum wage employees if a
certain target percentage of denied rebate submissions is hit, how
abuses will occur.

I just checked my order history, and there was no date on the invoice
itself if I simply listed it, but when I hit the "Print" button, a
window opened that did show the date of submission, including time of
day, under the order number and invoice number.

I gave up on NewEgg when they shipped me a WD 1 TB drive
with a broken sata connector and then refused to take it
back since they claimed I broke during the install. What
broke it was their crappy packaging. I now buy everything
at Amazon.
