Default Intel Extreme Graphics 2

How is Intel Extreme Graphics2? Does anyone have it? Is it sufficient if only
a little gaming is done?
Looking to purchase a 4600 and was wondering if this integrated graphics is
okay for mostly web surfing and rare gaming.
Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim,
I have a GX110(Pentium 3 w/256MB ram) here with the integrated Intel
810E and have no problems with most games. If you want to play the
latest, then that would be a different situation and others maybe able
to offer better advice. I am considering changing my video to a GeForce
(whatever the actual name is, too late at night to think of the exact
name) in the near future as I do game development for a hobby.
Hope this helped.

What is it with some games that causes problems? Is it any game that requires
more than the "up to 64MB" that the Intel Extreme Graphics can access? Can you
give some examples of games that would have trouble with Intel Extreme
Graphics?

Video memory size is irrelevant to performance.

Tom's Hardware has an article that benchmarked and tested the "big
three" integrated video solutions -

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic...903/index.html

The results really speak for themselves. It's a basic video solution
for general usage, but not suited for 3D gaming. 13FPS in UT2k3 is not
a fun experience.

It would seem so. Some of the demo's I have downloaded that are 3d
extensive wouldn't run as designated by their error messages. I can't
remember the name of the demos now as I removed them from my drive
(housekeeping). I did notice one demo such as Air Raid that begs for the
64MB video. It runs, but it's jerky and it would probably help if the
CPU was faster. If you are interested in the games that are 3d
intensive, a 64mb video would be an asset and investment.

Good information. Thanks Michael. More info the better :-)

After reading the article it does shed some light. I was planning on
going with the GeForce series ( with my limited budget) as it would
provide enough for what my needs are. However, if he is a serious gamer
I can see going with the Ati R9800 if his budget allows it.The
intregrated chips do rather dismal by the benchmark tests. The 810E in
mine seems to do rather well for what I use and do here, but if I wanted
to go with any 3d intense game or programming, I'll definately have to
avoid these IC video setups. Thanks again Michael for the info.

Try running Serious Sam SE or Lock On from Ubi Soft on those systems. Sam
will likely run with adequate system RAM, but will be 'chunky' and show
obvious graphics flaws/shortcomings throughout the game - as a guess. Lock
On ( a flight sim ) is such a hog, it likely would not even initialize, or
would do so very very slowly.

Anyone planning on running 3D games that require fairly significant system
resources should just plan on ponying up a few extra bucks for an AGP slot
and card. To not do so would be "penny-wise" and "pound foolish".
