Default Too many USB cards?

I don't know if there is a limit to how many USB ports you can have. More likely the problem is an IRQ conflict. Disable the USB1 ports in the BIOS and see if you can install the USB2 card.

I was told that I could add a 4 port USB2 card (Mercury KOB USB2V5) to my
(Pentiun II 350) Aopen AX6BC MB which already has 2 USB ports built in.

The installation is not going well in either W98SE or W2000Pro.

Is my objective possible or was I misinformed because my question was
mis-understood at the computer shop?

The 2 built in ports were working great. Havn't tried them since the
failed install of the card.

I checked out the card and found that a driver update was released today:

http://www.kobian.com/download_produ...&product_id=77

The card should work with your system.
Are you getting a error message?
IRQ conflicts etc.

Try a different PCI slot.

Thanks. With a card that new I didn't expect to need a driver update. :-)

I put it in the PCI slot farthest from the CPU. Don't know if that is the
first or last in the sequence. I will try the Aopen site and see if they
show PCI slot numbers. Are low or high usually best for USB add-on cards?

No error messages. The 'first' install, as described in their manual
seemed to go as stated except that it wouldn't cooperate with the repeat
that they said to do.
It did progress to their step
"8. After you have installed two VIA USB Open Host Controllers, Windows
will find a 'PCI Universal Serial Bus' device. Click Next to continue."

Again W98SE seemed to insist on loading a driver from its files rather
than the one from the Mercury CD-ROM as stated in the manual.

When all the dust had settled, my new USB graphics tablet was not
recognized. A check on USB devices pronounced that the drivers were not
correctly installed.

I have a suspicion that there may possibly be a problem with access to the
CD. Actually a CD-RW, It works fine and I have just burned my first CD
without wasting a blank. :-)
However, on boot W98SE assigns letter E to the CD (secondary master) and
F to the IDE ZIP drive (secondary slave).

W2000 insists on reversing these two drive letters and help has no easy to
find info on how to force the correct assignment.

Right now the drive letters are a minor problem. Neither W-OS handles the
USB card install so that they work.

Again, maybe too much detail - but better than too little?

Now to download the update and try again.
