Virus software help
Hi, I need some info from others that have used a virity of virus protection
suits as Im using Norton internet security 2005 and im happy somewhat with it for it has a good detection and stops attemps of hacking into my pc with the firewall while im online but it looses several thousand points when it comes to new programs being instaled onto my pc as I have done in the past ie something went wrong and I had to do a clean reinstall of everything like OS, programs, but that is ok sortof except when I have to install the software online for Norton with a slow 56k modum usual time 4 hours. So, what is better than Norton as I have heard that there are a few out there that dont use up as much resources as Norton - and dosnt slow down the Pc its on? Thanks Shaun B. |

I've used AVG from Grisoft and it seems to do a decent job. Uses much less resources and it's free. -- Jan Alter or |

Note that you can install both antivirus software packages, they work OK with each other. All three of these are free utilities. http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160 http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti.../lng/us/tpl/v5 These all work great. Also see my earlier thread on norton: http://groups.google.com/group/alt.c...397472ba8790c5 Lots of good information there. -Dave |

Most computer security experts say that both should be used. However, one or the other (alone) is a lot better than no protection at all. You can buy a standalone hardware firewall, but good routers with hardware firewall built in cost little more than similar routers with no firewall. I'll include a link below, just for one example. It's a Zyxel wireless (and wired) router with firewall. Zyxel makes the Netgear brand routers, so it's a very good brand. -Dave http://www.shop.com/op/~P_334WT:_Sup...3?sourceid=298 |

using a hardware and software firewall is over kill for the common home
user. Use AVG as your Antivirus and user a router to connect to your highspeed connection (dsl/cable). its much better then a software firewall solution and will free up resources on your computer since it wont have to run a firewall anymore. -Rene |

"rrodriguez83" wrote in message ps.com... using a hardware and software firewall is over kill for the common home user. I would have thought so too but I have such a combination and even though the router's firewall blocks most intrusions I still get about two attempts a month logged by the software firewall. I would love to turn off the software firewall but even that little number is reason enough for me to keep it on. -- -Don Ever had one of those days where you just felt like: http://cosmoslair.com/BadDay.html ? I tried Avast for a while, but the talking interface just bothered me. Since then I use Antivir, which I think is a German development, but you can download it also in english. Seems to work well, has daily automatic updates of the database. Only irritating thing I find is that I cannot adjust the priority of the daily update so that it does not interfere with my online gaming. If I am not careful, Antivir minimizes everything! But this irritation lasts only a short while, the update is over in just about no time at all. |
