Default MMC 7.x -> 8.8 upgrade == No ATI TV

Subject says it all. I know I need to fork out $10 and get a ATI MMC
8.1 CD for my AIW Radeon. However, I thought it was going to affect
only the DVD player (based on all the usenet and message board
postings). Sure enough, the DVD player doesn't work, but ATI TV Player
also fails to come up.

The failure mode is that it displays the splash screen and then goes
away silently without any error messages.

I've upgraded to DirectX 9 on Windows XP if that helps. Can anyone
confirm that my problem would be solved by buying the ATI MMC 8.1 CD ?

It took me two rounds of installing the Catalyst drivers and MMC 8,8 after
DirectX 9 to get the TV function to come up. Don't know why, but it's worth
a try before you give up. Just don't install the latest bleeding-edge
Catalyst driver released today - looks like it has a few new faults.
