Default Refilling one's own toner cartridges?

Anyone here with experience of refilling LaserJet toner cartridges? In
particular, the 96A cartridges for the 2200 printers?

Sorry no, when we looked into the economics - it just wasnt worth it,
the eBay warriors can do it cheaper and easier than refilling yourself -
at least in the case of the HPCP1025 sets anyway. Youtube?

I've bought aftermarket 96A cartridges on Amazon -- two different
vendors -- and they've lasted less than a year, compared with original
HP or with OfficeMax-branded "remanufactured" cartridges that were
printing far more pages per month and lasting several years.

I've seen a few YouTube videos. Some show pulling the whole cartridge
apart, while others show just cutting a couple of holes.

Any particular eBay vendors whose refilled cartridges you'd recommend?

A little advice; I used to do this. The original drum can be re-used once and
after that needs replacement.
It is a fairly easy process, you just need to buy good quality toner.

Well, now I am wondering about persisting with this printer at all or
replacing it by something more modern, such as a Brother laser printer,
for which genuine cartridges are far cheaper than genuine HP cartridges.
(And, yes, I know that the drum is a separate "consumable," but not for
a long time, given the number of pages I print these days.)

I've toyed around with it for HP P3005 printer cartridges. I couldn't
find toner cheaper than the cheap Ebay cartridges, but I think I did
try it once using toner from a cartridge that didn't work and I got
a refund for. I am (well, was) in the habit of pulling old cartridges
apart for mechanical parts and collected the left-over toner from
that as well. I based my refilling on what I'd seen doing that rather
than any YouTube videos, and I'm afraid I can't really remember now
what I did (I'm basing the fact that I did it mainly on the fact that
the tubs of toner to use for the job aren't where they were). My best
attempt at a memory is pouring the new toner into a hole in the side,
which I think just had a cap over it with the knock-off cartridges,
but might have been better sealed on the genuine ones.

One thing that I do remember is to do anything involving toner
cartridge internals outside (preferably while a light breeze is
blowing). My first attempt at pulling the old cartridges apart
for parts resulted in a great mess, and probably no small health
hazard.

I've found that also, though not as bad as you suggest (it might vary
between models). One thing that I have noticed is that the toner seems
thicker on the page with cheap cartridges from Ebay than with a
remanufactured one, so possibly they have the same quantity of toner,
but use more of it per page.

Well, I decided to go for a Brother HL-L6200DWT as having similar
features to the current LaserJet 2200DTN. And with the Amazon Dash
activation (the printer signals when it is getting close to needing a
new toner cartridge or drum) there's an extra 10% saving on cartridges.

New printer for about the price of two OEM cartridges for the old one.

I have the Brother printer now, and it seems to be fine.
