OK, I believe I've solved the problem.
As I originally mentioned, after formatting a CD-RW, I drag and drop files using Windows Explorer - and without opening up EZCD Creator/DirectCD. I just now popped in the disc, moved some files around, and then had to open the DirectCD application (with the icon in the System Tray). Then, and only then, was I able to eject the CD-RW by right-clicking the icon in the System Tray Eject. Suffice it to say, this is not an ideal solution but one I can work with nonetheless. I have always disabled DirectCD from msconfig but now I see why it needs to run - either in the background or start manually anytime I use a CD-RW. This also seems to have answered a question I've been pondering for some time: EZCD Creator (or packet-writing software, in general) must be installed on any other computer in order to use a CD-RW as a giant floppy disc. Seems pretty ridiculous when the program itself suggests "dragging files to a CD using Windows Explorer". If my last assumption is incorrect, I'm all ears... |

Well I am glad you have sorted it out, and yes you do have to have EZCD to drag and drop, it would appear (I have not tried it without myself) Windows doesn't have the capability to burn disks it would appear. I disabled it in msconfig too cos the less crap you run at start up the better, presumable enabling it would make eject work at the cost of a longer boot up time. However drag and drop does work without it enabled, you just cant eject the disk!!! I doubt it would work without EZCD installed in the first place though. Personally I will be investing money in a huge hard drive rather than in CD's as it is an altogeather less pain full solution, especially as far as burning audio disks is concerned. |

Why, DirectCD is rejected even by none other than a cRoxio Shill: ===================== From: Mike Richter (Roxio Shill) Date: 8/19/02 I have used only DCD for packet writing, have had no problems due to the software - but too many due to the format itself to bother with it any longer. ===================== From: Mike Richter (Roxio Shill) Date: 6/17/02 uninstalled DCD when I stopped testing for Roxio ===================== The above Mikey's statement is the first ever case in which a Shill is rejecting the very product IT is shilling for. Why, DirectCD makes CD-RW media go bad -- in 5 minutes! --------------------------------------------------- Surely CDRW's don't develop errors after 5 minutes? --------------------------------------------------- ================================================== ========= From: "BrianT" Subject: Loosing Disk Space {formatting CDRW} Date: 5/8/03 Mike Richter (Roxio ****) splattered: BrianT wrote: When I re-format a CDRW with Drag to Disk Full Format {EasyCD 6}, the space available after format drops by between 150 and 200 Mgs and I cannot get it back. The space you are losing is due to sectors found to be unreliable. It's a good sign that the disc is developing errors and is ready for the trash. You'll also find that formatting gets slower; it takes time to retry verification and to mark the bad sectors. If you insist on using fixed-length packets, you ask for that as well as losing data. Mmm, but if I format a brand new CDRW I get the full monty then if I immediately re-format, quick or full, I loose 150Mg. Surly CDRW's don't develop errors after 5 minutes? Also from your statement "If you insist on using fixed-length packets, you ask for that as well as losing data" are you suggesting that the Drag and Drop part of Easy CD is unreliable and should not be used ? If so why does Easy Cd 6 have this software and say how easy it is to use. Now I am very puzzled. ================================================== ========= [So, why does Ezcd 6 have DirectCD (Drag-to-Disc), Mikey?] With a Shill like this, Roxio doesn't need any critics! ------------------------- Roxio, Eat Your Heart Out !! ------------------------- |
